Not an easy answer but : 300 tdi not so complex, a lot of issues can be dealt with by self or a reasonably competent garage. MPG better than TD5 in my experience, 30 + can be achieved whereas TD5 struggles to better 25. Problems : All the tdi cambelt issues should be fixed by now, gearboxes are basically the same so same issues. Land Rover specify a 10W40 oil for the 300. If I understand what this guy is saying, a 5W40 or 0W40 would be better due to better flow when cold. But I think I read somewhere that the later 300tdi engine has some sort of electric engine management.
